Review: Heartless by Marissa Meyer

51NdyQ0sYDL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_I could not wait for this book to be released since I loved the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and I appreciate a good fairytale retelling.

I was thrilled to learn that the story was about the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. As a child, I wanted to know her backstory and what made her into “Off with its head” type of woman.  I think that the villains have more complex personalities and have more stories to tell than we see in the original books.

This novel totally met my expectations. To begin with a great writing, complex characters, a mind-blowing plot and unexpected plot twists. Could not put it down for a second.

Our main character is Lady Catherine Pinkerton, the daughter of the most honorable Marquess of Rock Turtle Cove and a very ambitious Marchioness. Everyone expected her to live by the plan was made for her, to marry the dull and reluctant, awkward King, of Hearts and become the Queen of Hearts, but she apparently has dreams of her own. Except being beautiful, loving and brave young woman, she is also a brilliant baker. She plans to open her own bakery, the best bakery in the entire Kingdom of Hearts. Between trying to avoid King’s proposal and convincing her parents to help her with the bakery, Cath meets a handsome and mysterious Jest the Joker. They understandably fall madly in love, but like in every story (otherwise, it would be too easy, right?), they cannot be together. With Jest, Cath realized that she could get everything she wants, the bakery, and the adventures and of course, the greatest dream of all, the true and passionate love.  As their adventure continues, we get a chance to sip a tea at the Mad Hatter’s (who did not yet go mad) legendary tea party, meet the White Rabbit, the charming Cheshire the terrifying Jabberwock (who has a secret of its own), get to go through the Looking Glass and back and so much more.

Did I mention a very enchantingly gorgeous Joker?

P.S: Make sure you have a snack, while you reading this one! ☕

Stuff and nonsense. Nonsense and stuff and much of a muchness and nonsense all over again. We are all mad here, don’t you know.

Rating: 5/5
