Review: Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

It’s not a regular review, be prepared. It’s mostly me expressing my frustration about Aelin Galathynius and whining about it for ten minutes.

I have a long history with Sarah J. Maas’s books. I loved the ACOTAR series and I read the Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight and I liked them and OMG I loved Chaol and Dorian. When I started the third book and suddenly Aelin had a new love interest I was so annoyed because what about my Chaol darling? I ended up being very mad about the book and did not finish it.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a video by Regan PeruseProject about the Kingdom of Ash and she was like not liking Aelin and Rowan as well and still enjoyed the series and made me want to give the series another shot.

In Empire of Storms, everyone is just fighting with the bad guys, the war is coming and allies are desperately needed. Bottom line the group has to deal with many issues. That’s all I’m going to say about the plot, I don’t want accidentally spoil something.

So, I ended up reading three books in almost one sitting and I actually really enjoyed them. I still don’t like Aelin. I don’t know why she is considered a strong female character… Is being a complete bitch means being a strong character? Anyway…

I think if she would share her plans and secrets and won’t do stuff behind others backs, they could work more effectively and accomplish way more. Hello, Aelin! Those people are loyal to you, they trust you, and they believe in you, their only goal is for you to succeed so why the hell would you keep secrets from them? What with this bitch attitude? Dorian is also a king you know! Why do you treat him like you’re so much smarter and better than him? Does she not trust them? Or does she think they are not smart enough to understand her smartass plans? That is so disrespectful… I’m just furious right now! Also Rowan… I’m sorry but his character is not impressive either. How from a fierce Fae warrior he turned into Aelin’s puppy? Very impressive character development…

Luckily for me, all the other characters saved this series; Aedion, Lysandra, Manon, Dorian, Chaol my bae, Alide, Lorcan (OMG Lorcan), and of course Abraxos. I kept reading despite constantly rolling my eyes on A and R.

I think Lysandra and Alide are much stronger female characters than Aelin. Both went through a lot (like everybody else in the series) but managed to stay kind and respectful and never whined about their pasts, unlike the Queen who points out how she suffered and how people treated her badly and blah blah blah every single chapter. She doesn’t look good compared to other girls. So I just decided to pretend she’s some kind of annoying side character… and it actually worked.

I can’t wait to start the Tower of Dawn. A book about Chaol! I think it’s going to be my favorite of the series.

Rating: 5/5 because I’m not letting A & R ruin my Throne of Glass experience.
